A speed test server is a specialized server designed to measure the speed and performance of your internet connection. It does this by exchanging data with your device and calculating how quickly the data is transferred.
Key points about speed test servers:
- Purpose: They help determine your download and upload speeds, as well as other metrics like ping (latency) and jitter (variation in latency).
- Network: Speed test providers like Ookla (Speedtest.net) maintain a vast network of servers globally to ensure users have access to nearby servers for accurate results.
- Selection: Speed tests automatically select a nearby server with low latency to measure your connection’s maximum potential.
- Factors: The speed recorded by a speed test is influenced by various factors, including your device’s capabilities, Wi-Fi router, internet service plan, and the performance of the chosen server.
In summary, a speed test server acts as a reference point for measuring your internet connections’ speed and performance. It plays a crucial role in helping you understand the quality of your internet service and identify potential issues.
An Ookla speed test server is a specialized server deployed by Ookla, the company behind the popular Speedtest.net service, to measure internet connection speeds.
Key points about Ookla speed test servers:
- Purpose: They enable users to test their download and upload speeds, as well as ping (latency) and jitter.
- Network: Ookla maintains a vast network of over 15,000 servers globally, ensuring accurate and localized speed testing for users worldwide.
- Selection: Speedtest automatically selects a nearby server with low latency to maximize accuracy.
- Accuracy: Ookla emphasizes the quality and neutrality of its servers, making them a trusted standard for measuring internet performance.
Hosting your own Ookla Speed Test Server:
Requirements: Visit Ookla website to check official requirements. Click here
I have installed over 30 Ookla Speed Test servers around the world. As per my experience you follow below requirements.
Hardware:
- CPU: Any server CPU or Personal Computer CPU with minimum 2 core. If your user base high then more than 2 core needed. But you can start with minimum 2 core CPU.
- RAM: Minimum 4Gb RAM required. Again if the user base is high then 8Gb is recommended.
- HDD/SSD: The space is not important for Ookla speed test servers. You can use minimum 20Gb disk space.
- LAN: 1Gbps support LAN needed. For high user base you can use 10Gbps LAN.
- Bandwidth: As per Ookla you should have open bandwidth for the server so that multiple users can do the test at a time without any problem.
- OS: Ookla can run on both Windows and Linux. But I recommend to use Linux (any Linux distro)
- IP: One public is required for the server.
Other Requirements:
- Company website with full information like contact details, services etc is must to host Ookla Speed Test Server.
- A business email required. For ex: support@companyname.com
- One subdomain is required. For ex: speedtest.yourcompany.com
How to ready the server:
